Kavita Kumari Ran 1,600 Metres Barefoot for a Home Guard Job

In Ramgarh, Jharkhand, 27-year-old widow Kavita Kumari ran 1,600 metres barefoot and in a saree during a Home Guard recruitment trial. Behind the viral video is a mother trying to build a more secure future for her two children.

A six-minute run in a saree

On October 4, Kavita Kumari arrived at Sidhu-Kanhu Stadium in Ramgarh for a trial run ahead of the upcoming Jharkhand Home Guard recruitment.

Many candidates had running shoes, tracksuits and other sports equipment. Kavita was wearing a saree and slippers.

When it was time to run, she removed her slippers and completed the 1,600-metre distance barefoot.

Several reports put her time at around six minutes, comfortably inside the 10-minute limit reported for women in the physical test. The exact timing has varied across reports, with Hindustan Times reporting seven minutes based on the account of training academy director Ajay Karmali. What is consistent is that she completed the distance well within the prescribed limit.

A video of the run later spread widely on social media.

But the footage only showed a few minutes of Kavita's life. Her preparation had been going on long before she stepped onto the ground.

Who is Kavita Kumari?

Kavita is from Soso village in Ramgarh district's Dulmi block.

She became a widow after her husband, Deepak Mahto, died following a prolonged illness around three years ago. She is now responsible for her two children as well as her elderly in-laws, according to reports from NDTV and Hindustan Times.

Her circumstances left her looking for a stable source of income.

Reports say she has taken up work including labour at a brick kiln and previously worked as a private security guard. The Home Guard recruitment therefore represents more than another job opportunity. For Kavita, it is a route towards a more dependable income for her family.

Preparing without proper equipment

Kavita did not have access to professional training or running equipment.

According to The Times of India, she began preparing herself by watching YouTube videos and practising early in the morning near her village. She reportedly woke around 4 am to run before beginning her daily responsibilities.

Her preparation later brought her into contact with Ajay Karmali, a serving Home Guard who runs the HMT Physical Academy in Dulmi. The academy provides free physical training to local candidates.

Kavita eventually joined the training there as she prepared for the recruitment process.

The lack of running shoes remained a practical difficulty. So when she arrived for the October 4 trial, she ran in the clothes she had and without footwear.

The recruitment behind the run

The physical trial is part of a larger Home Guard recruitment drive in Ramgarh.

The district is recruiting for 284 Home Guard positions, with the selection process including physical tests followed by a written examination. Reports say the physical tests are scheduled to continue from October 24 to November 5.

The recruitment rules also include provisions for women and for widowed and divorced candidates, according to reporting on the drive.

For Kavita, qualifying in the running event was therefore an important step, but it is not the same as securing the job. She still has to go through the official recruitment process.

Why her run drew so much attention

The video became widely shared because the contrast was immediately visible.

Kavita was running a demanding physical distance without shoes and while wearing a saree, alongside candidates who had access to conventional sportswear.

But reducing the moment to what she was wearing misses the circumstances behind it.

She was preparing for a government recruitment test while supporting two children and elderly family members. She had no expensive training setup and had been building her fitness through early-morning practice.

The run was one part of a longer attempt to find financial stability for her family.

What happens next?

Kavita's viral run was part of a preparatory trial rather than the final recruitment result.

She is continuing to prepare for the official Home Guard selection process in Ramgarh.

The attention surrounding her run has also brought recognition from people outside her village. A local running group honoured her after the video gained attention, while the physical academy that helped her train provided her with proper running equipment, according to reports.

For now, the next milestone is the official recruitment test.

Kavita's six-minute run may have lasted only a few minutes, but it has brought national attention to a much longer struggle: a young widow from a village in Jharkhand trying to secure a job while carrying responsibility for an entire family.
