From civil engineering and television commercials to Jamai Raja and now Lakshman in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, Ravie Dubey’s career has unfolded across two decades.
Before Ravie Dubey became Lakshman in Ramayana, he had already spent nearly two decades building a career on Indian television.
Dubey studied civil engineering, but acting was never completely outside his plans. While pursuing his degree, he began modelling and appearing in advertisements, eventually choosing to pursue entertainment alongside his education. In an interview with The Times of India, he recalled that his father had encouraged him to keep engineering as a backup while he explored acting. His first television role came in 2006 with Stree... Teri Kahaani on DD National.
From there, Dubey took on a series of television roles, gradually establishing himself in an industry where recognition often comes one project at a time.
Finding His Place on Television
His early years included shows such as Doli Saja Ke and Yahan Ke Hum Sikandar. A more significant opportunity came with 12/24 Karol Bagh, where he played alongside Sargun Mehta, who would later become his wife.
Then came Saas Bina Sasural in 2010, which brought him wider recognition. Four years later, Jamai Raja became an important turning point in his career. His portrayal of Siddharth Khurana made him a familiar face to television audiences and established him as one of the recognisable actors of Hindi television.
But Dubey's career did not remain limited to scripted television. He also explored hosting and reality shows, gradually expanding his presence beyond acting.
That willingness to move between different parts of the entertainment industry eventually led him towards production as well.
From Actor to Producer
Alongside Sargun Mehta, Dubey became involved in production through Dreamiyata Entertainment. The move gave him a role behind the camera as well as in front of it, allowing him to participate in developing and producing entertainment projects.
That broader experience became another chapter in a career that had already moved well beyond the engineering path he had started with.
But the biggest change in scale was still ahead.
Lakshman Is a Different Chapter
Dubey is now playing Lakshman in Nitesh Tiwari's two-part Ramayana, alongside Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. The first part is scheduled to release worldwide on November 5, 2026, with the second instalment planned for Diwali 2027.
The role has a different weight from the television characters that made Dubey a household name. Lakshman is one of the central figures in the Ramayana, and the film is being mounted as a large-scale cinematic adaptation with an international production team.
For Dubey himself, the transition still appears difficult to fully process. Speaking about the film recently, he said that even after spending around two and a half years shooting for it, playing Lakshman still felt surreal to him.
That reaction makes sense when viewed against the path that brought him here.
He began with an engineering degree and small opportunities in modelling and advertising. Television gave him his first sustained platform. 12/24 Karol Bagh and Saas Bina Sasural expanded his recognition, while Jamai Raja turned him into a familiar name for a much larger audience. Hosting, reality television and production then added other dimensions to his career.
Now, almost twenty years after his television debut, he is stepping into one of the most prominent roles of his career.
Ravie Dubey's journey from an engineering student to a television star and now Lakshman is not really about leaving one world behind for another. It is about how a career can keep expanding when an actor continues to take opportunities beyond the role that first made people remember his name.
