After 18 years of practising Bharatanatyam, Vidushi Vindhyashree Rai has received the Dakshina Kannada District Rajyotsava Award 2026-27 for her contribution to the performing arts.
For Vindhyashree Rai, Bharatanatyam has been part of her life for 18 years. The journey has involved far more than performing on stage. Alongside her work as a dancer, she has also taken up choreography and teaching, helping younger students understand the discipline, technique and vocabulary of classical dance.
That sustained work has now received recognition at the district level. Vindhyashree was honoured with the Dakshina Kannada District Rajyotsava Award for 2026-27 during Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations at Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru.
The award recognises her contribution to Bharatanatyam and the wider performing arts. For a young artist who continues to balance her artistic practice with her education, the recognition marks an important moment in a journey built over years rather than a single performance.
A JOURNEY BUILT THROUGH PRACTICE
Bharatanatyam demands consistency. Its vocabulary is shaped through movement, rhythm, expression and precise physical technique, with progress depending on years of repeated practice and close learning.
Vindhyashree's work reflects that long-term engagement with the form. She has performed on several platforms while also working as a choreographer and teacher. Through training aspiring dancers, her relationship with Bharatanatyam extends beyond her own performances and into the process of passing the form forward.
Her involvement in the performing arts also goes beyond Bharatanatyam. Recent reports note her participation in theatre, music and anchoring, showing a wider engagement with cultural and performance spaces.
RECOGNITION FOR THE WORK BEHIND THE STAGE
The Dakshina Kannada District Rajyotsava Award places attention on a part of an artist's journey that audiences do not always see.
A performance may last for a few minutes, but the preparation behind it can involve years of learning, rehearsal and discipline. Teaching adds another responsibility, requiring an artist to communicate techniques and traditions to students who are still developing their own understanding of the form.
For Vindhyashree, the award acknowledges this sustained contribution. It recognises not only her presence as a performer but also her work in choreography and training.
KEEPING CLASSICAL DANCE MOVING FORWARD
Classical art forms survive through practice, performance and transmission. Every generation of dancers learns from those before them and, in time, becomes responsible for passing that knowledge forward.
Vindhyashree's work as a performer and teacher places her within that continuing cycle. Her recognition through the Dakshina Kannada District Rajyotsava Award is therefore also a reminder of the work required to keep traditional performing arts active in contemporary life.
For 18 years, Bharatanatyam has been part of Vindhyashree Rai's journey. This award gives that long commitment a public moment of recognition, while her work as a performer, choreographer and teacher continues.
